Yoj is an artist with a clear understanding of crafting a feel and a moment both musically and vocally with his releases. Jump surely introduces that style of creativeness in an instant, gradually building a soundscape around its listeners that’s all at once contemporary and still.
M.C./Producer hailing from Kingston, New York. Motivated by the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, MF Doom, Kanye West, J. Cole, and countless other hip hop legends. “Yoj” is “joy” spelled backward. In life, I found happiness or “joy” in reverse, hence the name Yoj. Since my youth, I’ve suffered from clinical depression and have undergone a lifelong journey to find joy. My music is a representation of that journey. EP is coming soon.
The beat works beautifully underneath Yoj’s personal outpouring. The track sounds great. Jump reignites a sense of brightness that’s more in line with the mood of the soundscape. Again, that voice is stylish and softly confident – there’s a sound to Yoj’s music that’s easily recognizable.
As the track progresses, Yoj moves with a gradually intended style of lyricism, exciting far more during the latter half thanks to crafty wordplay and having indeed found his flow and purpose with this track.
There’s a professional finish to the whole thing. It pours over with equal parts dynamic and quick ease – the hook settles in, as does the artist’s style, and tunefully there’s a fair amount to gain and which splits this from the majority of recent releases. Grace is a big part of that, things can be upbeat without falling heavy or pushing for insanely fast tempos, and Yoj is an artist who effectively pays praise to that.
Jump is an easy-going exploration of modern hip hop that’s well-rooted in the natural style and stream of the genre—an easy one to enjoy if you’re a fan of laid-back vibes and artistic freedom.
