eF eL O ft. Pascala’s latest offering “I WANT YA” is a passionate track, with an addictive hook and a powerful message. These awesome souls present listeners with an undeniably memorable melody, from verse to pre-chorus to chorus – everything leaves its mark, and the leading vocal carries each moment flawlessly. eF eL O and Pascala met and became friends in their late teen years. They’ve lost touch once they each went on to college to pursue their education and careers all the while holding on to their musical passion. eF eL O started doing rap music again as it is his usual genre but quickly fell in love with Afrobeat type songs. Pascala being a singer and a zealous Kizomba genre fan saw her old friend’s video and reached out to catch up.
The backdrop to the track has the simplicity of classic, mellow Afro Rap. There’s an element of Kizomba to the sound, the loop varies a little as the track progresses, but for the most part, the vibe is set by the minimalist energy of the leading riff and the subtle beat. Once you get into the vibe of the sound, the easy-going energy of the music, there’s only really the hope that the vocal performances and lyricism that follow will satisfy, and it only takes a line or two to realize that they absolutely will.
The song in its entirety is well written, and the structure is effective in that no moment lingers for too long, but everything is placed appropriately so as to really let it shine at the right time. The sound on the whole is perhaps more attractive and amazing. The music in fact crosses over into more of a pop sound at times, which works well in that it brings forth the catchy melody and the easy listen to the ambiance. The soundscape picking during the verses is beautifully gentle, so you focus on the words, you hear the story, and you appreciate the experiences behind it all. Furthermore, it really contrasts well with and complements the following hook section.
That calm sort of confidence mentioned has the effect of attracting your attention by means of this certain skillful and effortless swagger that has the perfect rhythm to it. Both artists have a flow that fits this style of music brilliantly, their voices sound smooth yet occasionally gritty, very much in keeping with the themes touched on throughout – their lyrics have an undeniable honesty about them that is hugely valuable. The way in which the artists reflect upon their lives and their experiences thus far has so much appeal.
