There’s a pretty stunning sense of development throughout IZAC’s latest release “Kid Cosmic”, not least of all due to the journey implied by the title. This feeling of moving and progressing is strong, but structurally, in terms of the songwriting – the crafting of the composition itself – this is quite unlike any of his previous releases.
As stated, that independent alternative hip hop is alive and kicking here. The progression of the chords, the distortion, the distance – despite the melody’s inherent ability to suggest depth and passion – you can feel the emotion of the piece from the overall energy of it. The artistry is what creates the vibe, much more than the simple application of specific lyrics that don’t allow any room for the imagination to get involved. In this case, the music is yours and yours alone as you listen.
It’s a sound that grabs your attention – a live performance is likely to back that sentiment up with even more intensity. The intricate details of his voice work smoothly together to make for a confident, believable, and ultimately very memorable experience. It’s a pleasure to hear the roots of organic alternative rock being utilized in such a genuine and unapologetic manner. The instrumentation and indeed the recording style brings about a vintage sort of atmosphere, though the songwriting presents something new and quite personal, essentially presenting, all in all, a sound that reaches out to a range of audiences in both a rhythmic and deeply human way.
The gradual rising intensity as this song opens up makes for a brilliantly captivating and passionate moment that leads you addictively into the center of the music. The performances of every single element have been creatively and skilfully executed. Initially, the amazing soundscape is the first thing to highlight this, soon followed by the rhythmic and melancholy energy of that electronic riff. Nothing ever wavers, once the quality reaches that level it remains, though the weight of the music falls away intermittently – as a songwriter the artist has crafted the track with full awareness of the structural requirements to keep it interesting. It works really well. The melody of that leading riff stays with you long after listening – it has both a freshness and a familiarity that just makes sense here and draws you to listen again.
