Eric Matthys’s colorful blend of RnB, soul, and lofi comes through with some uniquely interesting storytelling on this latest release “Do You Remember”. This is a song that leaves its mark on you with just a single listen. This particular arrangement of melodies and riffs, combined with the energy and the concept, topped off with the perfect amount of repetition for the final fade – it all makes certain you remember it for quite some time after listening.
Eric Matthys introduces his sound and his songwriting in a powerful way here, and what’s great about it is that the whole thing is extremely pure and organic. In such a saturated world of music, it’s often thought that the more you put into a track, the bigger the effect – hence the overly layered RnB releases that throw in any and all instruments and key changes just to grab your attention. The truth is, when the production is done, it is genuine and thoughtful, and when the humanity of the performance is clear and captivating, all you really need is the song. That’s all you need with this release – the song draws you in with its magnetic melody, and the artist keeps you involved with the sheer passion and depth put forth by his vocal delivery and music as well.
As things progress, the song’s hook is unusually mellow, especially when compared to the melody. This creative freedom, this refusal to submit, makes for the most interesting songs, in my opinion. Hence the way this feature began. Eric Matthys is doing whatever it was that certain individuals were doing a decade or two ago that made them really seem fresh and carefree – unaffected by the industry or the rules or the expectations.
The song works beautifully as a piece of artistic expression. On this particular recording though, certain details or additional touches really help brighten up the edges. The music is stunning, perfectly executed and offers so much in the way of warmth and volume. It gives you the feeling that this is all much bigger than simply an individual and an electronic vibe, though that’s exactly what you’d hope to stumble upon at a live show. The raw emotion would almost certainly keep you mesmerized throughout. Hopefully, there’s more to come.
“Do You Remember” is an awesome track. Simply put, this change from the melancholy verses to the somewhat amazing chorus section is compelling, baffling, and strangely satisfying.
