“K.O GodSon” has crafted one of his most immersive soundscapes yet for the single “Black On” to all the audience out there. The opening few moments of this song lay out a thread that seems to be the main element or strength of the song – the hook is presented from the offset, the music has a certain sense of rhythm, K.O GodSons’ voice is gentle yet striking. As things progress though, the featured vocal and the structural aspects bring through a track that has far more to offer than the simple rhythm and melody of that key line.
“Black On” presents an artist with a sheer love for music – it runs deep in everything he creates. The track does indeed have those repetitive, comforting elements that we turn to when we hear them appearing, but it also lets individuality wander the stage. The track has a partly organic feel, the bounce comes from the electronic soundscape and the stop-and-start nature of the beat. The whole thing never quite peaks at the manic levels of Hip Hop music, but the rising energy and warmth of it are equally entrancing and even quite energizing.
The second, third, and fourth times you explore this, that opening ambiance has an immediate familiarity. The whole track is stunning, these multiple layers of color and dreamlike consistency accompany flying lyrical fragments of that central idea in a glorious way. When the beat drops in, your heart picks up the pace to follow suit, the music starts to rain down around you, and somehow the complex nature of the whole work of art evolves to become this very simple, pure journey – through thought and possibility.
There’s a superb use of contrast showcased throughout this release, the fast pace of that distantly rhythmic rap vocals creates a manic aura. Performance-wise the track is everything it needs to be. The leading voice carries the melody and ideas in a genuine, strong manner, and the instrumentation has been captured and produced to a superb standard – you can, and should, turn the music up loud and let it work its magic. K.O GodSon knows exactly the sort of sound they want to present, and they know exactly how to do that – this single feels authentic, relevant, and beautifully interesting at the same time.
