Music has been getting a little over complicated these days, veering off down unnecessarily complex story-lines and musical tunnels. A simple, hard-hitting remedy was well and truly needed – enter SPITTA.
“Power Ranger” is an infectious and musically satisfying hip hop track that presents admittedly brilliant musicianship from every angle – beginning with gentler, lighter verses, smashing into life as a united team for the hooks. It’s only really when you lay the lyrics out in print that you realize how few there actually are. For what it’s worth, the track – should you simply hear it through the speakers or from a distant festival stage – is everything you’d want from an organic hip hop song. The music draws you in, its style and swagger feel authentic and skillful, right the way through to the leading vocals and the production; everything is impressive and fully immersive should you need to escape into the moment for a while.
“Power Ranger” is a track that sticks with what it knows and what it intends to express from start to finish. The ideas implied by the title are fed into further within the lyrics, talk of nostalgic systems and audio preferences pours through. Meanwhile, the music appears with the crash and crunch of authentic hip hop. There’s a rap fusion to the finish, perhaps feeding into the concept even further, and what this does in hindsight is give you a genuine sense of what the artist would sound like in a live setting.
On top of all of this, leading vocals offer a subtle but certain level of confidence and professionalism. It’s reliable from the offset, believable, easy to get into. The soundscape sets the bar at a particular height and everything else follows suit beautifully. There’s a point to the song, to the ideas expressed by it, and to the mood set by the music. It’s easy to grasp and a total pleasure to stumble upon. So much so that when the track ends, you miss that awesome rap vibes, that rhythm and the soundscape.
At less than four minutes long it’s almost essential to listen more than once – though of course, this is a far better effect to have on an audience than to overstay your welcome. “Power Ranger” is superb, a great song and one that finds itself at the top of our main playlist for the foreseeable future.
