Introducing Shellshock Lullaby’s boldly innovative, immersive new composition, “Sleep Debt,” from which it’s a joy to highlight a track that shows the individuality and variety of their approach – “Sleep Debt” leads with relentless intensity and character.
Shellshock Lullaby was formed in 2011, and their quirky blend of alternative rock and heart-pounding live shows have earned them a solid reputation as one of the most exciting artists to come out of the Montana music scene.
Russell Nelson (vocals/guitar), Hannah Skiles (bass/vox), and Andrew Ellmaker (drums) are Shellshock Lullaby, three long standing friends with a combined 60 years of musical knowledge. This power trio has performed at several shows both in their own state and around the west, including Warped Tour, Oregon Country Fair, and opening for acts like Black Flag.38 Special.
“Static Noise,” Shellshock Lullaby’s debut EP as a complete trio, was released in 2018 as their biggest record to date. This album yielded fan favorites, including “Without Serendipity” and “Static Noise.”
Shellshock Lullaby’s first full-length album, “The Blue Hour,” is its most significant work, with themes of overpowering dread, bewilderment, self-discovery, and rebirth.
Shellshock Lullaby combines a multi-layered Electronica/Rock background with gritty, pop-Esque vocals of growing volume and intensity into rock realms, inspired by self-assurance and bathed in a passionate commitment to the art form.
The band’s vibrant arrangement is a standout and a straightforward stride in an excellent, engaging direction. The vigor of the vocal placement set-up gives an essential air of honesty to the song, allowing the grit, disdain, and transparency of the words to reach out in a more accessible way.
Initially, the vocal comes in to shake things up – a tale, a certain nostalgic rock rasp that seems born to act in this manner. That quality then proves itself to be relatively boundless as the song progresses, with the hook erupting into action with the unexpected vibrancy of a timeless rock classic.
It feels like a far greater moment than the modest set-up permits, which speaks volumes about engaging songwriting and the track’s potential for live performances.
