“Our Night” is the latest single from Ädept. The track blends ambient synths with wildly creative World Beat percussion and keen Pop sensibilities. The mysterious Harkness returns. We first heard from the Toronto-based musician in September upon the release of his debut single, “I.D.” That record introduced us to an exceptionally talented, enigmatic singer, songwriter and producer whose love of classic Pop music is matched only by his ability to create it.
He spent more than ten years developing and defining his sound. Inspired by decades of Pop and Rock history, his music has a timeless quality. Aside from his mononymous title, the artist chooses to keep his identity a secret. With a mix of esoteric lyrics, traditional song structures and inspired musical arrangements he lets the music speak for itself.
“Defibrillator” is his latest single, released November 6, 2020. With its lush symphonic arrangement and beautifully layered vocal harmonies, the tune is one of the most adventurous Pop songs to come across this desk in some time. Harkness weaves strings, horns and orchestral percussion into a rich wall of sound.
The song sounds like a long lost Beach Boys track. However, this isn’t “Barbara Ann.” Think instead of Brian Wilson’s later, more sophisticated work. “Defibrillator” would sound right at home in the “Pet Sounds” or “Smile” sessions. It is completely satisfying and a lot of fun.
The track deals with the constant decay around us and the Light that is found within it.
Check out “Defibrillator” on the Deep Indie Dive playlist. And follow the links below to connect with Harkness. Stay in the loop on all of his future releases, including the forthcoming album “The Occasion.”

Verena Bachinger, known professionally as “ena b,” is a singer, songwriter and guitarist originally from Austria. Over the past decade her musical journey has followed her real life travels around Europe and the Middle East.
In 2014 Verena began songwriting while studying composition and writing in Jerusalem, Israel. Verena experimented with multiple musical genres and performance styles for the next two years. In 2016 she moved to Lisbon, Portugal. Since then she has continued to hone her craft. Last year, she began releasing a series of singles as ena b. on SoundCloud.
The singer debuted on other streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music earlier this year with the song “Make Room.” On November 6, 2020 she released her follow-up single “A Fight for Love.” The song is a poetic and melancholy examination of the need we all share for human connection and how that sometimes conflicts with our assertion of individuality and desire for freedom.
Musically the song features a mellow finger-picked, clean electric guitar paired with Verena’s subdued yet soulful and heartfelt lead vocal. Strings color the mix along with minimalist percussion and bass. Soft background vocal harmonies swell in the chorus. The sound is soft, sad and beautiful.

Nikitta is a new name emerging from the UK music scene. Although she only recently made her debut with the 2020 single “Dance In The Night,” the artist’s path to a professional life in music started twenty years ago when she was just 12 years-old.
Early in her young life Nikitta moved with her mother from her birth home of Manchester, England to Glasgow, Scotland. There, music became a catharsis and ultimately the primary focus of her energies. By the age of 17 she was singing for millions on international television and touring the UK with the popular X Factor television show. Already, by that time she had lost her mother to cancer and had herself been struck by a car.
After her experience on The X Factor, the singer’s career brought her to live in London for a time where she collaborated with cutting edge urban artists such as Rowntree, Fastlane Wez, D Dark, D Double E, Skitz Beats, Davinche, Cori.e, Varren Wade and Nyomi Gray. Nikitta took a break for a time and moved back to her home in Manchester. There she raised her son and explored other creative endeavours. However, music was always at the forefront of her mind.
Recently Nikitta reentered the music world. She wrote songs with Emeli Sande and toured with Leona Lewis. Once she began creating her own new music, the singer connected with producer Richie Ray. From there her new single “White Bird” was born, released November 6, 2020.
“White Bird” opens with a lush soundscape of ambient synths and a downtempo percussive piano and bass groove. At the heart of the track is Nikitta’s beautiful and soulful vocals. She sings an emotional and personal narrative. As the song progresses, the vibe morphs into a mellow dance beat. As the music evolves, Nikitta’s vocal climbs to new emotional heights.
This is my second single I’m releasing and it’s still scary doing it independently but this is one of my favorite songs and it touches me so deeply. It speaks so many emotions. I wrote this one from the heart from past experiences. I hope it touches other people!

Captain Cloud is the professional name of musician and composer, Yehia Mazen. The twenty five year-old Burlington, Ontario-based artist has been creating music since childhood. Originally from Cairo, Egypt he moved to Canada ten years ago with his family. Starting a new life halfway around the world was a difficult journey, but one that ultimately opened up a new world to the young artist.
Coming to Canada was not easy. We all had to work to support each other. Music is a blessing to me. I simply want people to enjoy it as much as I enjoy playing.
Yehia has a deeply personal connection to his music. He is a completely self taught musician. Piano is his instrument of choice and he says it has been, “since birth.” Playing by ear, as a youth he reveled in the thrill of finding the notes and chords to his favorite songs. Now creating his own music, Captain Cloud finds those notes floating in the aether.
“Plethora” is Captain Cloud’s latest release. The instrumental ambient piece blends ocean sounds and broad atmospheric synths to create a lush soundscape. The sound of a nylon string guitar plucks a simple, soft and serene melody. As the song progresses, a mellow downtempo beat propels it forward. Meanwhile, various synths weave through one another in the periphery of the mix. It is a beautiful sound.
Milana Zilnik is one of those rare and unclassifiable artists who both excite and confound nerdy music writers like me. Her catalog is deep, diverse, wildly creative and practically impossible to adequately describe.
Her music has been compared to artists as vastly different as Alternative singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan and Jazz great, Chick Corea. In case you are unfamiliar with either, they both play piano and are both human beings alive on the planet Earth today. That is the extent of their commonality.
Milana is a pianist as well, but saying so seems limiting. The composer, singer and songwriter’s talents extend far beyond a single instrument. Her YouTube channel is an excellent testament to her broad range. Browsing through dozens of videos we find the eclectic artist covering Radiohead songs and Jazz standards as well as performing original classical pieces for solo piano.
The multi-award winning musician has been a performing and recording artist since her childhood. Born in Ukraine, Milana lived in Israel for many years before moving to Canada in 2008. Her life experiences and global origins inform every aspect of her songs which touch on issues of belonging, identity, the inner child, war and peace, and life and death.
To date, she has released fifteen original full-length albums and published three books with original scores for solo piano. In addition to performing and recording her own music, she also works as a session musician, arranger, and composer for films and online music libraries. Like a musical alchemist, Milana Zilnik brews an organic and often mystical sound from her studio in the Ottawa suburbs. Her latest experiment, the concept album “Abracadabra!” is her most ambitious to date.
The idea for “Abracadabra!” was first conceived in 2018 when Milana and her husband (Arty Sandler) picked up a Hang drum. If you are unfamiliar, a Hang drum (or simply “Hang”) is a bit like an inverted steel drum. Although Hang purists would no doubt be thoroughly offended by my oversimplification.
The two searched for many months to find the right Hang. They wanted one built on a full scale, containing a complete octave of notes. Most Hangs consist of only the five notes of the pentatonic scale. Amazingly by chance, the seller they finally connected with was from Milana’s birth town of Chernovtsy, Ukraine.
As soon as they received the Hang, Milana started writing songs. It did not take long for Arty to recognize that an album was coming into view. He suggested to his wife that they incorporate her piano and vocals into the mystical new sound they had discovered. Eventually they decided to add Cello to the mix and the “Abracadabra!” potion was born.
The otherworldly music Milana was composing ultimately lent itself to a fantastical story. As the pieces came together, the duo created a narrative for the tale. The record grew into a concept album following the story of a mysterious journey to a magical land. Each track represents another chapter in the saga:
Abracadabra! Track List(with composer’s notes)
Time – it’s time to break the routine and start the journey, the decision is made
Journey – the journey begins
Abracadabra – Every magical journey begins with a magical word to be spoken.
Behind the mirror – The word was spoken, we find ourselves in the magical land behind the mirror
Challenge – we are facing the first challenges of meeting what’s there in that land
Imminence – it was imminent that we will get there but what is there exactly? we shall see.
Encounters – in the magical land there are magical encounters with magical creatures that live there
Lost and Found – reflection on what we lost in our “regular life” and what we found there behind the mirror
Enchantment – we found ourselves in this magic land, it’s an enchanting feeling of being a whole.
Spirito Incantato – this and the following two tracks are some kind of a “triptych”, they are parts of the whole – we feel empowered now to change the world. “Spirito Incantato” – we are pronouncing the magic words, we are bringing the “Enchanted spirit” to life..
Witchcraft – … of course, it requires some witchcraft
Alchemy – … and alchemy
Returning – returning to the normal life, nostalgia and melancholia of leaving the magic land but also some major parts for what we are bringing with us back
The record almost never happened. The economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic dried up the team’s funding. Milana explains, “Then a miracle happened. My piano albums exploded on Apple Music, being included into numerous editorial playlists and bringing millions of streams. This is what basically funded “Abracadabra!”
When it came time to record the album, Milana and Arty contacted their friend and producer, Matthew Shell. Regular readers of The Static Dive will remember Shell from his work on The Groove Project and others. The three assembled a team of musicians to bring the vision to life. With Shell’s guidance they recruited; Phil DiMercurio (percussion arrangement), Yoed Nir (cello), Alexa Ray (vocals) with Milana Zilnik on piano and Hang.
The resulting recording is a beautiful and mesmerizing piece of work. Like the artist herself, the record defies easy classification. As the story unfolds, the ensemble weaves Classical, Jazz and New Age elements together into an entirely new sound. From the hypnotic rhythms and ascending/descending harmonized melodies of songs like “Time” and “Journey” to Jazz explorations of “Encounters” and “Enchantment,” the album moves musical genres around like puzzle pieces for the sake of the
Wordless operatic vocals emotionally narrate the tale without the encumbrance of written language. Enchanting circular Hang rhythms and melodies harmonize with mesmerizing Jazz and Classical piano arpeggios. The melodies travel a mysterious terrain of high peaks and low foggy valleys created by deep, earthy cello and percussion arrangements.
As has become common practice among recording artists during the pandemic, the performers on “Abracadabra!” recorded their parts in a separate studios around the world. The tracks were then sent to Matthew Shell for mixing. Shell’s production expertly captures the intangible organic magic that flows through the ensemble as they travel this mystical path. We can feel the wood resonate as cello strings dance with the low bass of piano chords. Hang notes morph into vocal arias. The record is deeply satisfying and successful as both a literary narrative and musical exploration. Do yourself a favor and set aside fifty minutes of your day to take the journey through “Abracadabra!”

Continoom is a melodic Metal band from Budapest, Hungary with badass energy and a message for the world. The hard-hitting rockers deliver a unique fusion of groove Metal and Industrial electronic music. Their sound is defined by virtuosic musicianship and thought-provoking lyrics. They rock heavy, hard and have something to say.
The “never-resting innovator,” Peter Schrott is the driving creative and ideological force behind Continoom. The producer, songwriter, vocalist and sound engineer first formed the band in 2019. With their debut studio album “Not My War” the group quickly gained recognition at home in Hungary and around the world.
They recently released the album’s title track as a single and video. The song combines high-octane Metal with insanely tight musicianship and futuristic flashes of electronica. From the opening power of the drum and bass rumble to the fast breaks, full throttle smash and killer solo of the guitar, the band brings it. Their chops are matched only by their energy.
Lyrically the song is a straight-up protest anthem. Peter’s vocals wail with emotion, ranging from Megadeth growls to operatic howls and industrial grunge angst. The sentiment is real and palpable as he rages, “Get me out of this bang, bang, bang… It’s not my war!”
If social activism in Heavy Metal seems like a novel idea, it is not. Head bangers have been waving peace signs since the dawn of the genre. From Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” to Metallica’s “One,” metalheads have shared more in common with hippies than just a hairstyle. On “Not My War,” Continoom rocks pacifism like nobody’s business.
Check out the video for “Noy My War,” above. You can also hear the song on the Deep Indie Dive playlist. Follow the links below to connect with Continoom. Rock on and peace out.
AR Base is a multi-faceted singer and songwriter from Inglewood, California who has made a career of mixing musical styles to spread his message. His music fuses Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop, Gospel and Neo-soul into a faithful and funky vibe. Throughout his career, AR Base has worked with legends like Stevie Wonder and Patti LaBelle.
From his own recording studio in Southern California he has produced award winning Gospel records “Praise in the Fire,” awarded Akademia’s Best Gospel Song in 2015 and “Grievous Words” in 2018 which was handpicked for Spotify’s Editorial “Fresh Gospel Playlist.” His music has been featured on Soul Tracks, PM Studios World Wide Music News, and was recently on Jesus Wired.
“Praise Him Anyway” is AR Base’s newest single, released November 6, 2020. Teaming up once again with his frequent collaborator, producer Shawn Hibbler, he drops an uplifting Gospel dance jam. The track opens with a soulful vocal intro before it kicks into a mellow groove.
EDM elements bubble under the surface, creating a powerful energy. AR Base’s smooth R&B vocal sets a serious but joyous tone. As he runs through the hardships we are all facing in 2020, he ultimately comes to the decision to choose his faith over despair or defeat. It is an inspiring and emotional message.
I write my songs for everyone. The downtrodden, people who have fallen or given up. I want them to succeed in every area of their lives, so they can lay aside the weights that are holding them back and run the race before them.

Aliyah Marie is a multi-faceted R&B artist from Detroit, Michigan. The free-spirited singer, songwriter, model and dancer makes soulful and spiritual music that reflects her values as a self-described, “plant-based flexitarian, chakra healing wombman and a culturally sun-charged being.”
Growing up in Michigan she taught herself to write, perform and produce her own music. After a series of mixtapes and live performances in high school she was accepted to the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance. Aliyah counts iconic female artists like; Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill, India Arie, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and Rihanna as her influences. Like her role models, she is known in the industry for both her artistry and a strong, independent hustle.
“Soul is Gold” is a track from the singer’s debut EP, “Rise.” Originally released in 2018, the record is receiving renewed interest with fans in advance of new music she has on the horizon. With deeply serious yet ultimately uplifting lyrics, Aliyah Marie advises us to “fight like a soldier, sting like a bee, fly like a bird and rule like a king.” Over a dramatic downtempo groove she relays tales of rising above her own hardships and finding strength in the knowledge that her “soul is gold,”
BlackEternal is a cinematic black metal project. The one-man band is the concept and creation of the mononymous multi-instrumentalist, composer and vocalist named simply ‘Nightmare.’ Based in Henderson, Nevada, Nightmare creates and produces his work in his own Area 51 Studios, named for the infamous Top Secret US Air Force base located in the Groom Lake region of his home state. The name reflects his fascination with all things paranormal, occult dark and creepy.
Since 2016, BlackEternal has dropped a series of dark literary narratives set to equally chilling symphonic Heavy Metal music. Nightmare has created a whole new medium of storytelling with his sound. His previous releases (2017’s “6equj5” and 2020’s “Darkness Embrace”) blend Metal, Electronic and orchestral music into richly layered soundtracks for his stories.
Listening to a BlackEternal record feels like reading a scary graphic novel. The well written prose creates a captivating storyline while leaving enough space for the artwork to fill in the blanks. The difference here of course is that Nightmare draws his pictures with sound rather than ink.
“Darkness Embrace 2: The Oakenford Chronicles” is BlackEternal’s latest release, and a follow-up to his album released earlier this year. The record chronicles the narrator’s descent into madness. The epic 9:15 track “Halls of Darkness” finds a female narrator gradually falling further into delusion until ultimately landing in a violent psychosis. Her monologue is interspersed with Nightmare’s guttural lead vocals, functioning as a sort of alter-ego or Greek chorus to her rapid psychological decline. It is a spine-chillingly effective storytelling technique.
Musically, “Halls of Madness” matches the wildly fluctuating mental state of the story’s lead character. The piece alternates between ominous ambient synth soundscapes to intense Metal onslaughts. Guitars, strings and rapid-fire, machine-gun percussion grow ever more intense as the story progresses and our heroine declines. The mood swings back and forth, becoming more volatile and unstable with each pass of the pendulum. It is a thoroughly entertaining and terrifying listen.
Check out “Halls of Madness,” above. You can also hear the track on the Deep Indie Dive playlist. And follow the links below to connect with BlackEternal. Dim the lights, light a candle and dive into the darkness.
Boaty Blanco is an aspiring Hip-Hop artist from the city of Hazleton in Eastern Pennsylvania. He got his start in 2018 with the debut EP, “Chaos.” The record’s title and its subject matter reflected the difficult road the artist had traveled to get to that point. Life, chance and questionable choices nearly halted his career before it began.
By his own account, Boaty struggled with drug addiction and the myriad personal issues that come with the territory. His problems eventually became so severe that he nearly lost his life to them. He needed to find a healthier way to exorcise his demons. Music was the catharsis he needed.
Music saved my life. It gave me a voice when I couldn’t find one. It gave me a friend when I felt alone. It gave me purpose when I felt like I had nothing. And it gave me an outlet to express how I really feel.
“Randy Savage” is Boaty Blanco’s new single. The song represents a lighter side of the artist’s repertoire. Over a Trap beat with elements of Reggaeton in the bass, the rapper runs through a wild list of pop culture references. In less than two minutes Boaty brings us through 90’s Alternative Rock (Seven Mary Three, Limp Biscuit), a Tom Hanks blockbuster classic movie (Forrest Gump) and of course the title character, Professional Wrestling legend “Macho Man” Randy Savage. It’s a fun song from a talented rapper whose flow is matched only by his sense of humor.
